It was later given the nickname, "The Cradle of Liberty," and was used for town meetings until 1822. Devine's Irish Pub, located within the Quincy Market at Faneuil Hall, is said to be haunted by the spirit of a dark-skinned woman wearing old, Colonial-era clothing. When an autopsy was performed on the man's disfigured and partially dismembered corpse, it was unable to be determined if he was crushed to death, or if he later died of strangulation after the machine caused the vest he was wearing to become so tightly wound around his neck that he was nearly decapitated. Ever since his death, Victor Hendrickson's mutilated apparition has reportedly been seen by those shopping at Quincy Market or walking on the streets nearby at night. Others report hearing the sounds of disembodied screams, and feeling a strange, unexplained presence. The Best Poker Ghost Stories

11/10/2021

Picture
If you allow yourself to sit back and think about ghost stories, many people would paint a picture of listening to one around a campfire keeping them warm with a group of their closest friends. There’s nothing but pitch-black darkness all around, with only the sounds of the crackling logs and the nature around breaking the silence.

Ghost stories often tell the tale of urban legends, ones that hark back to times of yesteryear. Poker was a game played back in the times of the cowboys, miners, and farmers in the time of the stagecoaches, saloons and six-shooters, arguably making it just as much of a part of U.S. culture as the Wild West or the old riverboats of the era. So let's up the ante a little and tell some stories of old…..

Changing Your Soul With The Devil...

Farmer John Morris was walking home late one evening when a well-dressed man approached him. The conversation happened to come upon where John had been that evening, Morris told the man he’d been playing poker at a friend’s, and he was happy as he’d won a lot of money. The stranger immediately perked up, challenging Morris to a game to which he declined.

After walking a little further, they reached a bridge; the stranger revealed some gold playing cards and began to deal with them. Morris couldn’t refuse, but it proved the stranger was a much better player. But he’d repeatedly deal the cards then asked Morris if he’d consider betting his soul? Suddenly, a card dropped from Morris’ grasp, the ace of spades dropped into the river below. They looked over the bridge to see it floating down the river, and Morris caught a glimpse of his opponent’s reflection.

He had two horns, glowing red eyes, and a forked tongue sticking out from his mouth. Morris turned quickly, but the stranger vanished, as a ball of flame flashed away into the night sky.

Dead Man’s Hand

Back in 1876, the legendary Wild Bill Hickok was playing poker, it was a deadly game played by professional gamblers and crooks. The old lawman sat at the table in Deadwood; the dealer dealt his first four cards. Just as he turned them over, there was the crack of a gun. Hickok slumped onto the table, his head hung forward, left resting beside his left hand, which held his cards. He had an 8 of spades and ace of spades, an 8 of clubs and the ace of clubs…. The 8th letter of the alphabet is H, followed by an A, H, and an A.

The cards were laughing at him. Anyone with a basic grasp of poker hand rankings knows that a hand comprises of five cards, but that’s not the case with the Dead Man’s Hand – you die before you get the fifth card. So remember, if you’re ever playing poker and the dealer turns over an 8, then an ace, then another 8, beware, because if your next card is to be an ace..... you’ll never play again.

McKenzie’s Ghost

Over in the UK, in Liverpool, Alexander McKenzie was a civil engineer on the Leeds to Liverpool canal in the 1811’s and achieved as much success in his work as he did in gambling. It’s said he was fortunate at the poker table in particular. He was known to almost read people’s minds, but it was rumored McKenzie had struck a deal with the devil. To have the world’s greatest lucky streak, he would have to hand over his soul the moment he was buried in exchange for this. McKenzie hatched a plan to save himself.

Although he saved himself from Lucifer’s grasp when he was entombed in 1851, sitting upright at a card table clutching a royal flush, it also kept him from heaven too. The large man renowned for wearing a cloak and top hat can still often be heard wailing and wandering around Rodney Street in Liverpool’s city center, leaving him as a lost soul with nowhere to go for the rest of eternity.

Dogtown

Coordinates: 42.636206°, -70.664767°
Location Address: Dogtown Road, Gloucester, Massachusetts
Dogtown was established in 1693 as The Common Settlement, where it's estimated over 100 families resided. By the end of the War of 1812 most of the settlement's community had resettled, and by 1830 the village was almost completely abandoned. The only residents who remained were widows and other outcasts who had no family to follow, and it's during this time that strange rumors began to circulate about the town. Many of the women who were forced to stay behind at The Common Settlement were accused of practicing witchcraft for survival, and residents began to witness shadowy figures and strange flickering lights in the surrounding woods at night. One woman named Thomazine Younger, also known by locals as Tammy, had developed such an infamous reputation as a witch that traveling merchants and others passing through the abandoned settlement would often leave offerings of fish and corn in hopes of avoiding her wrath, or receiving her blessing. The Common Settlement was also a popular spot for vagrants and homeless people, causing the remaining residents to keep guard dogs for protection. It's said that as the last remaining residents passed away, their pet dogs were left to fend for themselves in the woods. Over time, the population of feral dogs began to grow, and thus the old settlement was given the name, "Dogtown." The last remaining home in Dogtown was razed in 1845, at which point the settlement was used by locals as grazing land for livestock until the 1920's. Dogtown and the surrounding forest is now used as a recreational area for hikers, bicyclists, and other nature enthusiasts, who often claim to hear the distant howls of feral dogs and coyotes at night. Others hiking in the woods have reported feeling a strange presence, as if being followed or watched by an unseen entity. One popular urban legend claims that Dogtown is home to a werewolf, or some type of half-human, half-canine creature, which has allegedly been seen by Gloucester residents numerous times beginning in the 1980's. On the evening of March 17, 1984 - the night of a full moon - three separate individuals reported witnessing a monstrous, canine-like beast walking on two feet in the woods near Dogtown, and several days later a mutilated deer carcass was found at the location where the sightings occurred. Over the years countless witnesses have come forward with alleged experiences of paranormal activity at Dogtown, which has made it one of the most notoriously haunted ghost towns in the state of Massachusetts.

It is said to be haunted by the spirits of several former residents, including Mr. Pierce who passed away in 1888, as well as his first wife, Mrs. Susan Pierce, who died suddenly of a bacterial illness within a month of the mansion's completion. Due to financial difficulties during the 1930's, the SK Pierce Mansion was remodeled and used as a boarding house which then became a haven for illegal drinking, gambling, and prostitution. It's rumored that during this time a prostitute staying on the 2nd floor was strangled to death, and her killer was never discovered. The woman's spirit is said to haunt the old mansion, and is most often seen by guests on the 2nd floor in the room where she was killed. Another ghost said to haunt the SK Pierce Mansion is that of a man named Eino Saari, who is believed to have died of spontaneous combustion in 1963 after his charred remains were found in the master bedroom without any visible damage to the surrounding area. The SK Pierce Mansion was sold in 2015 at a fraction of its estimated value after multiple consecutive residents were allegedly driven from the house by the violent nature of the spirits there. It opened the following year as a haunted tourist attraction called the SK Pierce Haunted Victorian Mansion, which offers guided tours and overnight stays to guests, who are required to sign a liability waiver before entering the location. Those who are brave enough to stay overnight at the haunted mansion report experiencing a variety of unexplained poltergeist activity, from disembodied voices, footsteps, and whispers, to objects being moved or thrown across the room without warning. Others have reported being pushed or otherwise physically attacked by an unseen entity, as well as experiencing lights flickering, doors slamming shut, and electronic devices such as televisions turning on and off by themselves. The SK Pierce Mansion is also believed to be haunted by several other unidentified spirits, including that of a former maid, and a young girl believed to be Mr. Sylvester Pierce's granddaughter. The SK Pierce Haunted Victorian Mansion is considered to be one of the most haunted houses in the state of Massachusetts and was featured on an episode of the popular television series, Ghost Adventures, which aired in September of 2013.

Lizzie Borden House Bed & Breakfast Museum

Coordinates: 41.698928°, -71.156196°
Location Address: 230 2nd Street, Fall River, Massachusetts
On August 4, 1892, Andrew and Abby Borden were found dead in their Fall River, Massachusetts house, leading to what later became one of the most infamous unsolved murder cases in American history. According to police reports, Andrew Borden was found dead in the downstairs sitting room after receiving eleven blows to the head with a sharp hatchet, and Mrs. Borden was found upstairs lying face down in a pool of blood. She was killed instantly after being hit in the head  from the front with an ax and fell to the floor, at which point she was struck in the back of the head an additional seventeen times. Their daughter, Lizzie Borden, was put to trial for the two murders but was eventually acquitted on all charges. Despite popular misconceptions, Lizzie Borden was not immediately seen as a suspect in the murders, but she became a person of interest after giving several false and conflicting statements to the police. The Borden House was sold to a different owner after the murders, and eventually in 1996 the location was bought and opened as a tourist attraction called the Lizzie Borden House Bed & Breakfast. Guests staying at the Lizzie Borden House Bed & Breakfast often report encountering the spirit of an older man and woman, believed to be Mr. and Mrs. Borden. Others report hearing the disembodied sounds of a woman crying, as well as witnessing lights flickering, and electronic equipment being turned on and off by an unseen entity. Employees also report feeling a strange presence in the house, as well as experiencing sudden unexplained chills and cold spots.

Oak Grove Cemetery

Location Address: 765 Prospect Street, Fall River, Massachusetts
The historic Oak Grove Cemetery was established in 1855 as a burial ground for influential and upper-class citizens of Fall River and spans over 100 acres of land. It is also the final resting place of their daughter, Lizzie Borden, who was accused of murdering Mr. and Mrs. Borden but was later found not guilty of the murders. The old cemetery is said to be haunted by the three members of the Borden family, whose restless spirits are allegedly seen by visitors. Paranormal investigators report witnessing strange glowing orbs just past the cemetery gates at night, as well as hearing the sounds of disembodied moans and cries. Others who visit the cemetery report feeling the presence of an unseen entity, as well as a dark energy that permeates the surrounding area. Oak Grove Cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places in February of 1983.

Rogers to commemorate his daughter, Millicent, who died of heart failure in 1890 at the age of 17. Patrons at the old library often report witnessing the apparition of a young woman believed to be Millicent, and passersby report seeing a woman's silhouette standing in the windows late at night. Others report witnessing objects such as books and paintings moving by themselves as well as experiencing a strange presence, as if being watched by an unseen entity. Employees at Millicent Library also claim the location to be haunted by the spirit of a former custodian who died in the basement after slipping on a wet floor. Ever since, patrons have reported witnessing the man's apparition in the basement area, as well as hearing the sounds of disembodied footsteps. Police officers on several occasions have also responded to motion sensor alarms in the middle of the night only to find that the location is empty. One popular urban legend claims that Millicent Rogers' remains are buried beneath the library's foundation, however town records indicate that she was in fact buried in the nearby Riverside Cemetery along with several other members of the Rogers family.

Despite this, employees at Nichols House Nursing Home still report feeling sudden cold spots, as well as feeling a strange presence. Others have reported visiting elderly patients who appear to be talking to an unseen entity, and when asked, they claim they are talking to the spirit of an unidentified man. Nichols House Nursing Home is now owned and operated by the Royal Of Fairhaven Nursing Center.

#1 - Danvers State Hospital

Coordinates: 42.585062°, -70.981717°
Location Address: 1101 Kirkbride Drive, Danvers, Massachusetts
Constructed in 1878 as the State Lunatic Hospital At Danvers, the Danvers State Hospital was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 and was permanently shut down in 1992. The hospital and its series of underground tunnels are said to have inspired H.P. Lovecraft's novel, Arkham Sanitarium, which later inspired Batman's Arkham Asylum. Although most of the old buildings at Danvers State Hospital were demolished in 2007, the administration building and cemetery remain. The remainder of the 77-acre campus was redesigned as the Bradlee Danvers Apartments, which are rumored by many to be haunted. Urban explorers who have entered the old administration building report witnessing the spirits of former mental patients who were abused and neglected by caretakers, and subjected to inhumane medical procedures such as electroshock therapy and lobotomies. In its later years Danvers State Hospital began to admit criminally insane patients and became heavily overcrowded, which helped to further the atmosphere of abuse, neglect, and violence. Residents living at the newly constructed Bradlee Danvers Apartments report witnessing mysterious orbs and flashing lights coming from the abandoned administration building late at night, as well as hearing the sounds of disembodied voices, screams, and moaning. Others often report feeling a strange presence, as if being watched by an unseen entity.

#2 - Endicott Family Cemetery

Coordinates: 42.554783°, -70.930696°
Location Address: 25-55 Clinton Avenue, Danvers, Massachusetts
Established during the 1840's as a private family burial ground, the Endicott Family Cemetery in Danvers, Massachusetts is said to be haunted by three members of the Endicott family; a woman named Margaret, and her two sons, Jeremy and Alex. Paranormal investigators at the old cemetery report witnessing the three forlorn spirits dressed in old clothing from the 1800's, as well as experiencing other paranormal phenomena, such as unexplained cold spots and drops in temperature, and feeling the presence of an unseen entity. Over the years the Endicott Family Cemetery was abandoned and fell into a state of neglect and disrepair. One popular belief among locals is that the three spirits remain at the cemetery to protect their final resting places from vandalism, with many also noting that the headstones of Margaret, Jeremy, and Alex are some of the only burial sites that haven't been vandalized.

Coordinates: 42.561625°, -70.940961°

Essential Gear For Paranormal Photography & Ghost-Hunting

7/1/2021

Essential Gear For Paranormal Photography & Ghost Hunting - Blog - GhostQuest.net
Whether you’re a believer or not, going ghost-hunting can be a thrilling experience. Aside from being able to see eerie structures, it’s also a great way to witness surreal pieces of history, especially if you’re going to abandoned parks or centuries-old houses. As such, you’ll definitely want to bring the right gear so you can document your journey (and hopefully catch a few supernatural recordings). So, here are some things to pack for your paranormal photography and ghost-hunting adventure!!

Camera With Night Vision

While paranormal activity can happen at any time, many prefer investigating at night since there are fewer people, and less light and noise pollution. So, if you’re going ghost hunting in the evening, you’ll need a camera with night vision, as it can capture clear footage even in complete darkness. Some popular everyday cameras, like the Canon EOS R6, are already built for amazing nighttime shots and can operate in very low-light settings. But if you really want a camera designed specifically for nighttime adventures, the Hawke Sport Optics Nite-Eye 2000 Monocular has a built-in infrared illuminator that lets you see up to 200m in total darkness. It can certainly be worth the investment if you want to make paranormal photography a serious hobby.

Infrared Thermometer

One of the most common ways to detect the presence of a ghost is if there's a noticeable, sometimes drastic drop in air temperature. This is because ghosts are believed to pull the energy from the environment in order to manifest physically. Another theory is that ghosts go through dimensional gateways, which causes the air pressure to change, thus causing temperature drops. To check, you can use Kaiser’s Digital Thermometer with Probe, which has High/Low limits and sets off an alarm — so you don’t need to keep looking at it to keep track of the temperature. Doing a baseline sweep of the room or getting the average temperature of a place can help determine if a sudden temperature drop can be attributed to a spirit rather than just a cold draft.

Audio Recorder

Sometimes, ghosts don’t manifest themselves visually; people also report hearing voices and other sounds, usually at the edge of human perception. An audio recorder can let you pick up EVPs, or electronic voice phenomena, which can be the sounds of spirits trying to communicate. The Olympus VN-541PC Digital Voice Recorder is a great option as it can detect ultra-low- and high frequency sounds, down from 40Hz up to 13000kHz. These are sounds that humans can’t hear. Aside from simply hoping to pick up EVPs, you can do a structured EVP session, which is essentially a "question-and-answer" session with ghosts.

Spirit Box

A ghost box or spirit box is essentially a modified AM/FM radio that scans the band making white noise, and clears the air to help enable spirits to communicate with the user. In this regard, the P-SB11 can sweep radio frequencies faster than other ghost boxes, and many believe this provides the energy that spirits need for communication. When using a ghost box, you can also keep your audio recorder beside it so you can listen to anything you catch later on.

EMF Recorder

EMF, or electromagnetic field, is what many consider a signature of the paranormal. Previously, we talked about how ghosts need energy to manifest themselves, and EMF is thought to be the by-product of energy consumption. There are reliable EMF detector apps that you can download if you don’t want to buy an actual gadget. For instance, the Ultimate EMF Detector detects EMFs and their sources, and even lets you record them. Take note that EMF can also come from appliances and cell phones. On the other hand, having a big EMF reading with no obvious source means you could be dealing with the supernatural.

Alright folks, thanks for reading! I hope this provides some helpful information for those of you in the community who are new to ghost hunting!! And I know I always say this, but please be safe, and make sure to read this SAFETY DISCLAIMER before visiting any allegedly haunted locations. Happy Hunting!!

#1 - Blood Road

Coordinates:  42.916237°, -83.282472°
Location Address:  Blood Road, Metamora, Michigan
Blood Road in Metamora, Michigan is a 2-mile-long dirt roadway surrounded by swampy bogs and woodlands. It is rumored to be haunted by the spirits of a group of alleged devil worshippers who fled to Metamora during the late 1600's and early 1700's to escape the witchcraft trials occurring in New England at the time. It's said that the group used the wooded area surrounding Blood Road to perform dark occult rituals, including human sacrifices and the alleged summoning of demonic entities. Although no historical evidence is available to verify these claims many motorists traveling along Blood Road report encountering shadowy figures and apparitions lurking in the nearby marshes at night. In recent years locals have also claimed to encounter men and women dressed in cloaks gathered around bonfires meeting secretly in the woods, however most believe these stories to be nothing more than urban legends. Many also note that when wet, Blood Road turns a dark, red color similar to that of blood, however this is likely due to deposits of clay and other minerals found in the road.

#2 - Crybaby Bridge

Coordinates:  42.962976°, -83.240522°
Location Address:  Wilder Road, Metamora, Michigan
Sometimes also referred to as "Crying Baby Bridge," the location known as Crybaby Bridge on Wilder Road in Metamora, Michigan was constructed in 1938, and is one of several such bridges with similar folklore found throughout the United States. The story of Crybaby Bridge is a popular urban legend throughout the United States which typically involves a mother and child who meet an untimely end on or around a bridge, and whose spirits now allegedly haunt the site of their death. Many cities in different states have their own version of this legend, but in this particular instance the story told by locals is about a young woman driving along Wilder Road. When she reaches the bridge crossing the South Branch Flint River her car stalls, and she exits the vehicle to attempt to investigate. When she returns, she discovers that her infant child has crawled to the edge of the bridge and fallen into the river below. Despite no historical evidence to validate these stories, many who park their car on Crybaby Bridge late at night claim to hear the disembodied sounds of a baby crying, or witness the apparition of an unidentified woman. Other urban legends claim that the woman's spirit can be summoned by parking on the bridge and honking the horn three times. See also: Crybaby Bridge (Folklore Encyclopedia).

In 1937, a 19-year-old cafeteria employee named Theresa Schumacher was killed in the basement of Warriner Hall after becoming stuck in a small window leading to the building's elevator shaft. According to a news article published in a newspaper called Central State Life on June 2, 1937 the young woman died of asphyxiation after the elevator unexpectedly descended from the 3rd floor, completely crushing her skull. Ever since her tragic death students have reported encountering a female apparition believed to be that of Theresa Schumacher, who appears as a glowing blue specter. Her ghostly figure is most frequently seen near the building's auditorium or in the basement where her body was found, and is blamed for a variety of additional paranormal activity such as disembodied voices, whispers, and footsteps. Many also report feeling a strange presence in the basement area, as well as witnessing the elevator doors opening and closing by themselves. One popular urban legend told by students of Central Michigan University also claims that Warriner Hall is haunted by the spirits of two students who committed suicide by jumping from the top of the building, however these stories were later debunked by campus officials as being fictitious. On May 6, 1951, a student named Carolyn Corey passed away of unknown causes while sleeping in Barnard Residence Hall and is now said to haunt the location. Although Barnard Residence Hall was demolished in 1997 due to low student enrollment, two graduate apartments called Kewadin Apartments and Northwest Apartments were later constructed over the original location, which is sometimes simply referred to as The Graduate Housing Complex. Residents at The Graduate Housing Complex report encountering the spirit of a young woman wearing a white nightgown, and experiencing a variety of other paranormal activity such as lights turning on and off by themselves, and objects being moved or knocked from shelves by an unseen entity. Powers Hall is also rumored to be haunted by the spirit of a former student named Emily, who allegedly passed away during the 1930's and was buried in a piano-shaped patch of grass in the building's courtyard. Despite no historical evidence to validate these rumors many students at Powers Hall report hearing the disembodied sounds of a piano playing late at night, however most dismiss these claims as being nothing more than urban legends. A series of underground tunnels spanning over 9 miles in length also run beneath the university grounds, which were used by students to travel between buildings on campus during bad weather until 1979 when a student named James Dallas Egbert is rumored to have gone missing in the tunnels. Additionally, maintenance workers in the basement of Central Michigan University's Carlin Alumni House have reported hearing loud thuds and pounding noises that seem to come from within the heavy cement walls, and the disembodied sounds of heavy footsteps late at night when the building is believed to be empty. Several other buildings on campus are also rumored to be haunted, including Beddow Hall, Cobb Hall, and Troutman Hall, however very few firsthand accounts of paranormal experiences at these locations are currently available for reference.

#2 - Mill Pond Park

Coordinates:  43.600096°, -84.787637°
Location Address:  607 S. Adams Street, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan
Mill Pond Park in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan is a 90-acre wetland park located on the banks of the Chippewa River. It features a playground, picnic area, and a number of wooded hiking trails. #3 - The Mt. Pleasant Center

Coordinates:  43.614849°, -84.791424°
Location Address:  1400 W. Pickard Road, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan
The Mt. Pleasant Center in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan was first established by the United Methodist Church in 1892 as the Mount Pleasant Indian Boarding School. The 300-acre school once consisted of eleven buildings, and was one of several similar institutions funded by the United States Congress in an attempt to reeducate Native American children and indoctrinate them into American society. Students at the Mount Pleasant Center were taught religion as well as other vocational skills, and were disciplined severely for disobeying the strict rules set in place by caretakers. For example, children who spoke in their native tongue had their mouths washed out with soap, and even breaking a minor rule resulted in students being beaten with a belt or rubber hose. The boarding school even had its own cemetery on site where children who passed away were buried, including up to 700 former students who are believed to have been buried in unmarked graves and an additional 174 whose final resting places are marked with headstones. In 1934 the Mount Pleasant Center was reopened as a school for mentally ill and criminally insane young men called the Michigan Home & Training School. Stories of abuse and neglect at the school continued during this time, with many historians also noting that living conditions were poor due to the lack of qualified staff members and teachers. The location was renamed to the Mt. Pleasant Regional Center For Developmental Disabilities during the 1970's, and remained open until 2008. Between 2008 and 2016 the majority of the old school's buildings were demolished, however many believe the remaining buildings and the surrounding property are haunted. Many urban explorers and others investigating the old Mount Pleasant Center report witnessing shadow apparitions and spectral figures, as well as hearing the sounds of disembodied voices, footsteps, whispers, and moans. The Mount Pleasant Center was added to the National Register of Historic Places in February of 2018, and is currently owned by the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Nation.

Top 5 American Monsters: The Wendigo - Blog - GhostQuest.net
Here's the third story from my upcoming eBook, Top 5 American Monsters, available on Amazon for just $0.99 as part of The Folklore & Haunted Locations Guide: USA series!

And if you like this story, be sure to check out this creepy YouTube Video I made to go along with it!!

In Native American folklore, the wendigo is described as a supernatural, flesh eating monster, or sometimes as an evil spirit that possesses men and women to feed on human flesh. Roughly translated, the word wendigo means “the evil spirit that devours mankind.” Some believe a human can become a wendigo by being possessed by the spirit of one, causing them to commit acts of murder and cannibalism, whereas others believe a person slowly becomes a wendigo by indulging in cannibalism of their own free will. In some folklore, the wendigo is able to shapeshift to assume the form of a human that it’s cannibalized and can mimic voices and other sounds to lure unsuspecting men and women into its lair, which is filled with the bones and carcasses of its previous victims.

Wendigos are described as being tall and human-like in appearance, with some allegedly standing up to 15 feet tall, with gaunt, disfigured, skeletal features, and dark, sunken eyes. They are described as being lanky and having supernatural speed and hunting abilities, with sharp claws and fangs. They appear to be driven mad by the urge to consume human flesh, and their hunger can never be sated. It’s said that over time the wendigo’s appearance becomes more and more fearsome as the possessed individual is stripped of their humanity.

Alleged encounters with the wendigo have been reported throughout North America dating back hundreds of years before the arrival of European settlers, and continue to present day. Many doctors during the early colonization of America believed that the wendigo was real, with some even going so far as diagnosing criminals who committed acts of cannibalism with a rare condition called Wendigo Psychosis.

One famous case of alleged Wendigo Psychosis was reported in 1878, when a Native American trapper from Alberta, Canada named Swift Runner claimed to be possessed by the spirit of a wendigo. During the winter Swift Runner, his wife, and their five children were living in a cabin in the woods, trapping animals and hunting for food. The cabin was located just 25 miles from the nearest village.
According to historical documents, when Swift Runner returned to the village the next spring, he was alone. When people began to ask what happened to his wife and family, he replied that they had become trapped in the cabin over the winter by snow and tragically died of starvation. When authorities went to investigate the cabin, they found a gruesome scene inside.

Swift Runner’s deceased wife and children appeared to have been murdered, and their remains devoured. Due to the relatively close proximity of the cabin to town, it was concluded that Swift Runner’s cannibalism was not a last resort to avoid starvation, and many believed he had become possessed by the spirit of a wendigo. Swift Runner confessed to the killings, and was later executed at nearby Fort Saskatchewan.

Another alleged case of Wendigo Psychosis occurred in 1907, when a Native American medicine man named Jack Fiddler, who claimed to have killed 14 wendigos over the course of his lifetime, was arrested for homicide. At the age of 87, Jack Fiddler confessed to murdering an elderly tribeswoman because he believed that she had been possessed by a wendigo spirit. According to Jack, the woman was on the verge of fully transforming into a wendigo, and he had no choice but to kill her before she became a threat.

Jack Fiddler was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison, however he chose to end his life instead and committed suicide shortly after.

In recent years the wendigo has made its way into pop culture as a horror icon, with many Hollywood movies and television shows featuring creatures with similar characteristics and lore. Due to new technology like trail cameras, cellphone cameras, drones, and the internet, more and more sightings are allegedly taking place as well, with most originating in rural, wooded areas.

Whether the wendigo exists as a real supernatural creature, or is just an old fairytale to discourage men and women from the horrors of cannibalism, one can never be too careful in the woods...
