The Jared Coffin House in Nantucket, Massachusetts was constructed in 1845 by a wealthy sea captain and shipbuilder named Jared Coffin. It is famous for being the first mansion ever built on the island of Nantucket, and was obtained by the Nantucket Historical Society in the early 1960's. The old mansion is said to be haunted by the spirit of an elderly man, whose apparition is seen sitting in a rocking chair near the fireplace by employees and guests. Another spirit said to haunt the Jared Coffin House is that of a young Puritan woman whose apparition is said to harass unwed couples who stay in the same room together overnight, as well as the spirit of an unidentified young girl.
