Also known as Utica State Hospital, the Utica Psychiatric Center in Utica, New York was opened in January of 1843 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. It is renowned as being the first state-run facility for mentally ill patients in New York, as well as one of the first of its kind in the United States. It was shut down in 1977, and is said to be haunted by the spirits of former mental patients who were abused and subjected to inhumane medical procedures such as lobotomies and electroshock therapy. Urban explorers and others visiting the abandoned hospital report witnessing apparitions, as well as hearing disembodied voices, whispers, and screams. Others report feeling sudden cold spots, or feeling the presence of an unseen entity, and paranormal investigators often claim to experience issues with electronic devices, such as batteries draining unexpectedly. One popular urban legend claims that a series of underground tunnels exists beneath the asylum, where patients were allegedly brought to be left for long periods in solitary confinement.
