McPherson Mansion
"The Robert McPherson House"
Coordinates: 42.614066°, -83.925695°
Location Address: 915 N. Michigan Avenue, Howell, Michigan
The McPherson Mansion in Howell, Michigan was constructed in 1915 as a family residence by a successful entrepreneur named Robert McPherson and his wife, Eva. In addition to being a prominent businessman in the Howell area, Robert McPherson was also an avid collector of rare and valuable coins. Sometime before his death in 1956, Mr. McPherson allegedly found two matching silver dollar coins minted in the late 1700's which were valued at over $5,000 each (over $79,000 in today's money). When he brought the coins to a bank in New York for appraisal he was told the value of the coins would increase exponentially if there were only one of them. According to legend, Mr. McPherson took one of the silver dollars and buried it somewhere in the backyard of the McPherson Mansion, where the artifact allegedly still remains. Over the years residents living at the McPherson Mansion have reported encountering the spirit of Robert McPherson, who is believed to remain at the location to prevent his buried treasure from being discovered by the living. Other residents have also reported encountering a female apparition believed to be Eva McPherson. In 2007 the McPherson Mansion was renovated for use as a luxury office building, which includes conference rooms, a kitchen, fitness area, and several office suites.

Michigan State Sanitarium
"Georgetown Estates"
Coordinates: 42.587406°, -83.980177°
Location Address: High Hillcrest Drive, Howell, Michigan
The Michigan State Sanitarium in Howell, Michigan was constructed in 1907 as a tuberculosis treatment ward. In 1958 the hospital began to refocus on the treatment of mentally ill patients and was renamed as the Hillcrest Regional Center For Developmental Disabilities. It was closed in 1982 and demolished in 1985, however many of the building's old foundations and underground tunnels were simply buried, and still remain scattered throughout the facility's former 270-acre campus. Despite rumors of the location being haunted, the land where the old hospital stood was purchased in 1987 and a series of luxury homes were constructed in a neighborhood that is now known as Georgetown Estates. Residents living in the new homes often report witnessing the apparitions of former patients of the old hospital who died of tuberculosis, or mental patients who were subjected to inhumane medical experiments such as lobotomies and electroshock therapy. Others report feeling a strange presence in the area, or experiencing unexplained feelings of anxiety and sadness that subside upon leaving the location. The Michigan State Sanitarium is sometimes also referred to as "Hillcrest Sanitarium."
