Eloise Psychiatric Hospital
"The Old Wayne County Poorhouse"
Coordinates: 42.287162°, -83.342648°
Location Address: 30712 Michigan Avenue, Westland, Michigan
Eloise Psychiatric Hospital in Westland, Michigan was constructed in 1839 as the Wayne County Poorhouse and is believed by many to be one of the most notoriously haunted locations in the United States. During the early 1910's the facility was renamed to Eloise Psychiatric Hospital, which expanded to include an infirmary, mental institution, and tuberculosis ward. At its peak during the 1930's Eloise Asylum consisted of seventy-eight buildings spanning over nine hundred acres, which housed over ten thousand mental patients and an additional two thousand medical staff. The facility was entirely self-sufficient, and even had a bakery, trolley system, laundry facility, and amusement hall for its residents, as well as its own power plant, fire department, cemetery, and police force. Eloise Psychiatric Hospital was closed in 1982 after claims of patient abuse and neglect by caretakers, with many patients being subjected to experimental and inhumane forms of psychiatric treatment such as electroshock therapy, insulin therapy, hydrotherapy, and lobotomies. Although most of the buildings at Eloise were demolished over the years to make way for other commercial and housing developments, the remaining few buildings are believed to be haunted by the spirits of former mental patients and hospital workers who died tragically while being treated or working at the facility. Paranormal enthusiasts and others exploring the historic asylum over the years have reported encountering apparitions and shadow figures, as well as experiencing a variety of mysterious paranormal phenomena such as disembodied voices and screams, unexplained issues with electronic devices, and objects such as furniture or derelict equipment being violently thrown across the room by an unseen entity. Many visitors also report feeling a sinister presence, or experiencing sudden feelings of sadness and fear that subside upon leaving the location. Eloise Psychiatric Hospital was marked as a Michigan State Historic Site in 2007, and offers tours to paranormal enthusiasts which are hosted by a local group of investigators called Detroit Paranormal Expeditions, who were the first group to officially conduct a paranormal investigation at the location.
