Central State Hospital
"Central State Lunatic Asylum"

Central State Hospital in Petersburg, Virginia was first constructed in 1862 as a hospital for wounded Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War. In 1870, it was reopened as a mental asylum called the Central Lunatic Asylum, which is now called Central State Hospital. The location is believed to be haunted by the ghosts of former patients who died while receiving experimental medical treatments such as lobotomies, electroshock therapy, or hydrotherapy, many of whom were buried nearby in unmarked graves. Employees working at the old hospital often report witnessing shadowy figures and apparitions, or experiencing other unexplained paranormal activity, such as doors opening and closing by themselves, lights flickering, and the sounds of disembodied voices and moans coming from nearby abandoned buildings.
