Grandview Marquette Apartments
"The Grandview Apartments"
Coordinates: 46.539993°, -87.404205°
Location Address: 600 Altamont Street, Marquette, Michigan
The Grandview Marquette Apartments in Marquette, Michigan were constructed in 1915 as the Holy Family Orphanage, which housed hundreds of orphaned children until being closed in 1967. During this time rumors began to circulate of the horrible abuse and neglect suffered by children at the hands of orphanage caretakers, with many victims being subjected to cruel and extreme forms of discipline as punishment for breaking rules. The orphanage's administration building remained open for a time after its closure but was finally closed permanently in 1981, at which point the abandoned facility had already developed a reputation for being haunted. In 2016 the building was renovated and reopened as a low-income housing facility called the Grandview Marquette Apartments. One spirit said to haunt the location is that of a young boy who was allegedly beaten to death by a nun, as well as a number of other children who passed away under suspicious circumstances. Many residents living at the Grandview Marquette Apartments have also reported hearing the disembodied sounds of children laughing or crying, witnessing glowing orbs and lights flickering, or experiencing other unexplained paranormal phenomena, such as objects being moved by an unseen entity, or feeling a strange presence. One popular urban legend claims that during the building's use as an orphanage a young girl died of pneumonia after being locked outside during a winter storm. According to legend, her body was put on display in the orphanage before burial to discourage other children from breaking the rules. Now, many residents claim to encounter the spectral figure of a young girl, or hear the sounds of her disembodied screams and cries of despair.

Location Address: 300 N. Lakeshore Boulevard, Marquette, Michigan
The Marquette Harbor Lighthouse in Marquette, Michigan was constructed in 1866 and currently serves as an active light for naval traffic navigating Lake Superior. It was used as a training station for members of the United States Coast Guard during World War II, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in July of 1984. In 2002 the location also became the site of the Marquette Maritime Museum, which offers tours of the lighthouse during the spring, summer, and autumn months. Many also note that Jessie's ghost particularly seeks out the attention of other children, and is known to try and speak or engage with them.

Marquette Monthly
"The Marquette Monthly Magazine Building"
Coordinates: 46.550703°, -87.394533°
Location Address: 810 N. 3rd Street, Marquette, Michigan
The Marquette Monthly building in Marquette, Michigan was constructed in 1908 as LaBonte's Grocery Store, which remained in business until the 1990's. It was then used as a gift shop called Summer Cottage for a short time before being purchased by a publishing company called the Marquette Monthly in 1999. Employees of the Marquette Monthly and residents living in the building's 3rd floor apartment often report experiencing an array of paranormal activity, including lights turning on and off by themselves, objects being moved or thrown across the room by an unseen entity, and hearing the sounds of disembodied footsteps and voices. Although the cause of the alleged paranormal phenomena is unknown, one popular urban legend claims that the old building is haunted by the spirit of a woman named Beth Ann who died tragically on the 3rd floor after her shirt became tangled in the paper feeding mechanism of an old printing press. This story was later debunked as being fictional by Marquette author and historian Tyler Tichelaar in a 2018 book, titled Haunted Marquette: Ghost Stories from the Queen City.

Morgan Heights Sanatorium
"Morgan Heights Tuberculosis Hospital"
Coordinates: 46.520696°, -87.501153°
Location Address: County Road 492, Marquette, Michigan
Morgan Heights Sanatorium in Marquette, Michigan was constructed in 1911, and served as the upper peninsula's only tuberculosis ward for many years. It was described by locals as being a "waiting room for death," and the vast majority of patients who were admitted to the facility eventually died. Although patients were believed to have access to the most progressive tuberculosis treatments at the time many were also subjected to experimental medical procedures such as electroshock therapy, which later was proven to be ineffective at treating tuberculosis. In many cases as the disease began to progress, patients underwent surgery to remove their lower ribs or other abdominal muscles. Another common procedure called a Bronchoscopic Balloon Dilatation involved inserting a small rubber balloon into the lungs of an afflicted individual, which was thought to facilitate proper breathing. However, in many cases the operation resulted in death. Morgan Heights Sanatorium was closed in the early 1970's and remained abandoned until the early 2000's when the remaining buildings were either torn down or sold. Now property owners in the area where the old sanatorium once stood report encountering the spirits of the men and women who died tragically of tuberculosis (sometimes also referred to as "consumption," or "the white death"), as well as experiencing other unexplained paranormal activity such as hearing the sounds of disembodied voices and whispers, or feeling the presence of an unseen entity. Motorists and pedestrians traveling on the nearby County Road 492 have also reported experiencing similar paranormal phenomena.

Northern Michigan University
"Northern State Normal School"
Coordinates: 46.558567°, -87.406940°
Location Address: 1401 Presque Isle Avenue, Marquette, Michigan
Northern Michigan University in Marquette was established in 1899 as Northern State Normal School and is renowned as being the largest university in Michigan's upper peninsula. One popular ghost story told by university students claims that the Forest Roberts Theatre and Thomas Fine Arts Building are haunted by the spirit of a custodian who died of a heart attack during the 1970's in an elevator connecting the two buildings. Ever since, students have reported witnessing the elevator moving between floors unexpectedly, and others report feeling a strange presence, as if an unseen entity is lurking nearby. For many years, Room 304 in Halverson Hall was rumored to be haunted by the spirit of a female student who committed suicide in the late 1960's, however the building was demolished in 2017 to make way for a student housing complex called The Woods. Despite students passing down rumors of paranormal activity at Northern Michigan University for decades, many suspect these stories to be nothing more than urban legends.

Pioneer Catholic Cemetery
"Old Catholic Cemetery"
Coordinates: 46.527117°, -87.404496°
Location Address: 500 Pioneer Road, Marquette, Michigan
Previously referred to as Old Catholic Cemetery, the Pioneer Catholic Cemetery in Marquette, Michigan was used by early European settlers of Marquette County beginning in the mid-1800's. The cemetery was filled to capacity in 1908, at which point the location began to fall into a state of neglect and disrepair. Between 1912 and 1925 over 160 historic headstones and burial sites were relocated to the nearby Holy Cross Cemetery in an attempt to prevent further deterioration, however many of the bodies associated with the gravesites were unable to be located. For this reason, Pioneer Catholic Cemetery is said to be haunted by the spirits of those men and women whose final resting places were disinterred, and who may still be buried in unmarked graves. Paranormal enthusiasts and other visitors to the historic cemetery often report hearing the sounds of disembodied voices, whispers, and sobs, as well as feeling the presence of an unseen entity. In 2016, Pioneer Catholic Cemetery was restored by a group called Friends Of Holy Cross Cemetery, and is open for public visitation during daylight hours.
