Ashton Villa in Galveston, Texas was built in 1859 by Colonel James Moreau Brown and his wife, Rebecca. During the American Civil War, Ashton Villa was used as a makeshift hospital and headquarters, which switched sides several times throughout the war. The historic home is now a museum, and is rumored to be haunted by the ghost of James and Rebecca Brown's daughter, Betty, as well as their youngest daughter, Mathilda, whose spectral figure is allegedly seen and heard playing the piano late at night. Hendley Row in Galveston, Texas was constructed in the late 1850's for cotton refiners, traders, shippers, and other merchants. The building's lower floors are now occupied by Hendley Market, and the upper floors are used as apartments and offices. During the American Civil War, the building's roof was used by Confederate Army soldiers as a lookout post, and is said to be haunted by the ghost of a former Confederate soldier. Many also report encountering the ghost of a teenage boy who was killed in a factory accident, and who appears covered in blood, as well as the ghosts of two unidentified young children who are allegedly seen and heard laughing and playing. Lastly, the ghost of a mysterious woman in white is often seen throughout the old building, known as "The Lady In White." In 1821, the Karankawa tribe was invaded by a gang of pirates in a three-day battle that later became known as The Battle Of Three Trees. Over the years, locals and residents of the Stewart Mansion have reported encountering the spirits of these former pirate invaders and Native American warriors, as well as hearing the disembodied sounds of men yelling and fighting, and cannons firing in the distance. In 1950, the Stewart Mansion was donated to the University Of Texas and converted to a home for disabled children, which was abandoned in 1968. In addition to witnessing apparitions and shadow figures, urban explorers and paranormal investigators at the Stewart Mansion often report hearing the sounds of disembodied voices and footsteps, and piano music playing. One popular urban legend told by students throughout the years is that Ewing Hall, also referred to as Building 7, is haunted by the ghost of a man who previously owned the land where the building now stands. According to some, his ghostly face is now seen imprinted onto the side of Ewing Hall, and cannot be removed despite several attempts by university staff.
