The Brattleboro Retreat
"The Old Vermont Asylum For The Insane"

The 620-acre Brattleboro Retreat in Brattleboro, Vermont was constructed in 1834 as the Vermont Asylum For The Insane. It was renamed in the late 1800's, and remains in use as a treatment facility for mentally ill patients. In 1887, Retreat Tower was constructed by patients at the asylum as a place to become refreshed by the beautiful outdoor landscape, however many chose to use the tower to commit suicide instead. The abandoned tower is now surrounded by hiking trails, and is rumored to be haunted by the ghosts of former mental patients who committed suicide. Many also report witnessing mysterious shadow figures and apparitions in the nearby cemetery, where an unknown number of former mental patients were buried in unmarked graves.
