The Abingdon Tavern in Abingdon, Virginia was built in 1779 and is locally famous as being the oldest standing building in town. It is said to be haunted by several apparitions, including the ghost of a woman who is believed to have worked in the building as a prostitute, nicknamed "The Tavern Tart." Many also report hearing the sounds of disembodied voices and footsteps, or experiencing other unexplained paranormal phenomena such as objects being moved or rearranged by an unseen entity. Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia first opened in June of 1933. It is said to be haunted by several spirits, including that of a man dressed in white believed to be a former artistic director named Robert Porterfield, who passed away in 1971. Many also report encountering the ghosts of a number of former Civil War soldiers in the building's basement, which is connected to several other buildings in town via a series of hidden tunnels. The Martha Washington Inn & Spa
"The Martha Washington Inn"

The Martha Washington Inn & Spa in Abingdon, Virginia was first constructed in 1832 as a private residence by General Francis Preston, his wife, and their nine children. It was used during the American Civil War as a makeshift hospital to treat wounded soldiers, and is said to be haunted by the spirits of the men who were unable to recover from their injuries. Many also report encountering the ghost of a woman named Beth who died of typhoid fever during the 1860's, and who is allegedly heard playing the violin at night. Additionally, the inn's basement is rumored to be haunted by the apparitions of a number of African American slaves whose bones are allegedly buried in the walls. The old parking lot behind the courthouse, sometimes referred to as the Old Jockey Lot, is also rumored to be haunted.
